| The first Clarence Corner Hotel was built in 1863 and served the bush teamsters on their way to Ipswich up Annerley Road - known at that time as Boggo Road. This hotel gave way to the existing Clarence Corner Hotel constructed in 1889. The Clarence Corner Hotel was one of a staggering 17 hotels ranging along Stanley Street. These watering holes slaked the thirst of railway men, the local population and those involved in waterside activities at South Brisbane. The site is a well known landmark, with a curved veranda winding around the building which occupies the bend in Stanley Street and the corner of Annerley Road. Much of the original cast iron work has been replaced with modern steel sections or dispensed with. Nonetheless much of the charm of the old building remains.
Today the Hotel is now owned by Lee Reynolds who immediately set about renovating the grand old building, stamping his own brand of modern charm upon its foundations. The Clarence, with it’s chic style and vibe, now takes its place along side the many other emerging nouveau bars and restaurants dotting the inner city south side. |
